A Cowboy Riding a Giant Pillow
The original Rancho Pillow Motel opened with one of the most memorable signs in Sandusky history—a cowboy riding a huge pillow like a bucking bronco. It was named after a Gene Autry song about peaceful sleep:
"Oh, how I love my rancho pillow... I count my sheep on rancho pillow, while rounding up a dream or two... while twinkling stars play peek-a-boo."
That promise of comfort and peaceful rest? It stuck with us even after the name changed.
The Evolution to South Shore Inn
The Sciarappa family purchased the Rancho Pillow in the 1960s—a charming 24-room, single-story motel in Sandusky, Ohio. By the mid-1980s, they'd grown to meet demand: adding a second floor, modern amenities, and expanding the property.

During the 1980s renovation, the property was officially renamed South Shore Inn. While we honor our Rancho Pillow heritage, please book under "South Shore Inn" to ensure you're staying at the right place!
Some folks say we should've kept "Rancho Pillow"—it was certainly memorable. But the promise stayed the same: clean rooms, comfort first, and service that treats you like family.
