5 Reasons to Visit Sandusky, Ohio in May 2026
May doesn't get the attention it deserves. Cedar Point opens. The ferries start running. One of the biggest birding events in North America brings thousands of people to the Lake Erie shoreline, most of them for the first time.
It's a quieter version of what you'd find in July, with shorter lines, lower rates, and more room to breathe. Whether you're coming for the birds, the rides, the islands, or Bike Week, May tends to surprise people. Here are five reasons it's worth planning around.
1. May Is Birding Season on Lake Erie (May 8-17)
Every May, thousands of migratory songbirds stop along the Lake Erie shoreline on their way north. For serious birders, this is one of the best spectacles in North America. The Biggest Week in American Birding (May 8-17, 2026) draws visitors from across the country to Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, about 50 minutes west of Sandusky. Known as the Warbler Capital of the World, on a good morning you can see 30 or 40 species on a single walk along the boardwalk. Magee Marsh is free to enter.
If you want to stay closer to Sandusky, Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve in Huron is about 10-15 minutes away and sees the same spring migration. It's a quieter spot, less crowded than Magee, and a good option if you're combining birding with a Cedar Point visit or a trip to the islands. Some guests do both in the same trip, which works well with Sandusky as a base.
2. Cedar Point Opens for Season 157 on May 9
Cedar Point's 157th summer season opens Saturday, May 9, 2026. Opening weekend has its own feel: lighter crowds than July, cooler weather, and every ride fresh for the season.
This is also the first full spring season for Siren's Curse. If you missed the debut last year, May is a good time to catch those 90-degree tilts before the mid-summer heat sets in and the lines get long.
South Shore Inn is 1.8 miles from Cedar Point's front gate. Close enough to head back midday, take a break, and return for evening rides when it cools off.
3. The Islands Are Open, and the Timing Is Right
By late May, Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island are fully open. Restaurants, bars, and attractions are all running, but you're still ahead of the peak June and July crowds that turn the ferry lines into a long wait. Everything is available, and nothing feels like a production yet.
Two ways to get out there, and they serve different kinds of trips.
Jet Express opens its Sandusky dock on May 22, 2026. You can board right downtown, just 3 miles from South Shore Inn, and be on Put-in-Bay or Kelleys Island in short order.
Miller Ferry is the more affordable option. It's the least expensive way to the islands, with free day and overnight parking and a scenic 18-minute ride to Put-in-Bay. You can also take your car across, which makes for a very different kind of island day. More info at millerferry.com.
South Shore Inn guests: We keep Miller Ferry coupons at the front desk. That's $1 off per adult round trip, good for 2 passengers. Just ask when you check in.
4. Lower Rates, Fewer Crowds, and Better Weather
June rates go up. July rates go up more. May sits in between, with lower rates, better availability, and a region that isn't running at full summer capacity.
You're not fighting for a table or standing in line behind every family from Columbus. Same park, same ferry, same shoreline. Just a lot less crowded.
The weather is another thing people don't factor in. May temperatures are genuinely comfortable for being outside. The birding boardwalk, ride queues at Cedar Point, a day out on the water. None of it comes with the heat and humidity that makes July feel like work.

5. Ohio Bike Week Kicks Off on May 29
If your trip falls at the end of the month, you'll be here for the start of Ohio Bike Week (May 29 - June 6). It's the Midwest's largest motorcycle rally, and it changes the energy in Sandusky noticeably. Live music, events, and thousands of riders coming through the North Coast.
You don't need to be a rider to enjoy it. The downtown atmosphere is worth seeing on its own.
